How to Embroider Names on Sweaters Without Loving Your Handwriting: Tools, Tips, and Font Recommendations

Not everyone loves their handwriting, and when it comes to personalizing hand-embroidered name sweaters, it can feel overwhelming. Luckily, there are user-friendly tools that make it easier to create stunning designs.

In this post, I’ll provide recommendations for fonts and applications like Canva to design names with beautiful fonts, perfect for embroidery with yarn. Plus, I offer a video tutorial that walks you through 3 simple methods for transferring names onto sweaters. You’ll also receive a helpful PDF guide that explains how to print your designs once they’re ready, making your embroidery project as smooth as possible.

Originality in Embroidery: Why Your Unique Style Matters

When it comes to creating personalized pieces, the beauty is in the details, and that’s why each design I create is thoughtfully handcrafted. I don’t simply choose any font at random; rather I carefully combine hand-drawn elements and take inspiration from various sources and fonts, ensuring each letter fits beautifully and uniquely into the design. This process lets you add your personal touch, making each creation distinct and meaningful.

The process ensures that every item reflects your own creative touch, rather than simply replicating someone else’s style. It’s about making something truly yours.

By developing your own brand's signature style, you not only set yourself apart but also create a product that is recognizable and resonates with authenticity—something that can be a game-changer in a fast-growing niche.

Using Fonts to Create Your Design

If you're not confident in your handwriting, using fonts, for inspo, in apps like Canva is a great alternative! You can easily type the name or word you want to embroider, choose from various fonts, create and print your design to transfer it to your sweater. I walk you through this in my how-to video mentioned above.

One of my favorite resources for fonts is DaFont—you can type your chosen word into the search bar and preview it in countless fonts to see what works best for your project. Downloaded fonts from DaFont can be uploaded into Canva with Canva PRO.

I also love using the Procreate app to hand-draw many of my embroidery sticker designs. The stabilizing feature is my go-to—it helps make all my lines and curves super sharp, neat, and professional. This tool allows me to create polished, hand-drawn designs, ensuring they look perfect whether they’re for personal projects or products I offer in my shop.
